What

Investigating how parents and their children learn sign language and communicate with each other when a cochlear implant is not feasible.

Sign focuses on both parents and child learning sign language together, as well as developing closer relationships, understanding and communication with each other.

Why

In Denmark, children who are born or become deaf generally get cochlear implants (CI). The children who receive CI’s are not eligible to be taught sign language. However, ⅕ of all CI users do not have a fully functioning CI, as well as the ones that do work have to be taken off during sports, dancing or swimming to prevent damage. This leaves a communication gap between the child and their most trusted person - their parent.

How

Sign focuses on parents learning sign language together with their kids through a playful approach. The end product is a range of cards that visually describe how to sign different letters and words. The parent and child play together by one using the cards (single or combined) and signing, and the other one guessing the signs. A simple memory training technique that keeps children engaged.
