Introduction

Sustainability, community, and a good life

At Kolding School of Design, we focus on design that is meaningful and can help shape the world.

We explore how we live and where we can create improvements. We aim to solve problems and discover new opportunities.

The world is calling for change - towards sustainability, community, and a good life for all. This is not just about filling our lives with new things but also about improving what already exists. Making it more beautiful, functional, playful, and appealing. It’s about listening to people’s needs and involving them in the development of new solutions.

“The school provides excellent studio facilities where you can work with materials 1:1 - day and night, if you wish. Around 400 active students, including PhD candidates, are part of the school’s daily life, and approximately 90 new students are admitted each year.”
Bachelor's

Bachelor's degree programme

Become part of a creative and experimental setting and learn what design is – and what it can be used for. In 3 years you will be qualified to work as a designer on a wide variety of projects, both in Denmark and internationally.

The bachelor programme is a three-year undergraduate degree programme for creatives who want to work with their head as well as their hands. You will receive theoretial and practical training in design methods, concept development and materials, and you will test your knowledge on real-life cases and by doing your own experiments.

Master's

Master's degree programme

On Design School Kolding's Master's degree programme, you will use your design skills within aesthetics and function to reframe relevant challenges and create meaningful and emotional design solutions. The goal is to design new ways for people to interact as well as produce, consume and act.

We build on the Danish, democratic design tradition. In collaboration with the outside world, it is our ambition to create sustainable and inclusive solutions with play and creativity as leverage.

With that objective in mind, you will gain a deep and extended understanding of design methods, techniques and theory and thus supplement the knowledge as well as the competences and skills you bring with you from your bachelor's degree.

The education is structured as a cross between the design skills you have acquired on your relevant bachelor's degree (subject area), which is further developed in a thematic context (focus area) that you develop within.

The programme qualifies you to carry out research, development and teaching assignments at international level in both the private and the public sector.

The PhD programme comprises:

  • courses corresponding to 30 ECTS (a half FTE)
  • participation in active research environments, e.g. visits to other institutions (typically abroad), and conferences
  • teaching and dissemination

You complete your PhD by handing in either a monograph, a dissertation based on your own articles, or a dissertation based on your own artistic development work, which you then defend.
