Background
The DESTEX project supports higher education students to acquire skills in interdisciplinary innovation where creativity and industrial design are applied to the textile sector.

About

The Erasmus+ project “Destex - Industrial and Creative Design in Advanced Textile Manufacturing” focuses on strengthening the collaboration between design students from higher education and companies within the textile sector.

The project represents 8 partners from industry and academia with LCI Barcelona, Politecnico di Milano, University of Borås and Design School Kolding as the higher education partners.

The DESTEX SUMMER SCHOOL took place between the 21st and 25th June 2021 and covered different topics related to Advanced Textiles ranging from sustainability to digital fabrication such as 3d printing and laser-cut opportunities and from smart textiles to business opportunities.

“Participating in the Destex Summer School gave me great possibility to connect to students from Denmark and through Europe, as the programme is so well connected in so many different European centres. This made the intercultural exchange unique.”
Sofia Catalina Fiorentino Sarrate

Purpose

Organized in a hybrid setup 20 students from all universities collaborated virtually in multidisciplinary teams on a different challenge every day. Each day was hosted and organized by a different university.

The workshop day centering around laser-cut opportunities in the textile sector, concluded with a series of bags produced from different textiles exploring the effects of distinct materials on the overall shape of the bag.

Methods and outcome

The workshop day that was organized by Design School Kolding focused on sustainability potentials in the textile sector.

The day started with a virtual tour around DSKD’s weaving and knitting lab, followed by a presentation of the textile company Ohmatex who are producing smart textile wearables and ended with a hands-on workshop and virtual group activity. These group sessions explored sustainability opportunities in textiles products where students developed business opportunities for companies such as Bananatex, IKEA, H&M and Pangaia.

The day that was organized by Politecnico di Milano dealt with options of digital fabrication technologies, where laser-cut was applied to textiles in order to build on sustainability strategies such as modularity and zero-waste options.
