Data as a Material for Fashion

DigiTalk at Design School Kolding, 2 May 2022
By Marianne Baggesen Hilger

On Monday 2 May, 15.00-16.30 DigiTalks at Design School Kolding will proudly present Troy Nachtigall, Professor, PhD, and Fashion Designer from Amsterdam University of Applied Science. He will be joined by Line Rumholt, experienced accessories and fashion designer and course responsible for the ECCO X DSKD project at Design School Kolding.

Troy Nachtigall will look at data as a material by applying it in the field of fashion. Along the way, he will look at the relationship that the practitioner of fashion has with the technologies; How fashion is any technology that envelops the body; and How getting dressed each morning is the craftsmanship of being a cyborg. This perspective on the body and technology leads to physical and philosophical ideas of how data is a material that we form as designers with our wearers and other stakeholders.

Troy Nachtigall says,

- By making fashion with data as a material, we believe that we can critically create for everyone; no matter what shape, size or color. Data is the key to personalized fashion as it empowers and enables individuality yet retains the social potential of fashion. Fashion has believed for centuries that clothes used to be personally tailored, we intend to make that true for all. This is an important moment for fashion. Much of the industry is bankrupt, creating opportunities to rebuild with new ideas surrounding technology and sustainability. Data is key to the digital transformation of fashion, meaning new craftsmanship is also required. Furthermore, the unique qualities of fashion allow for our research to inform technology and data science.
