Green Team

With the appointment of two new associate professors, Design School Kolding further strengthens its research and education efforts in the field of sustainability
By Charlotte Melin

For many years, Karen Marie Hasling and Ulla Ræbild have experimented, researched and inspired each other in a professional teamwork as part of the Lab for Sustainability and Design at Design School Kolding. The special combination of Karen Marie Hasling's background as a textile and design engineer and Ulla Ræbild's background as a fashion designer has resulted in a number of innovative projects, including the Sustainable Design Cards, which shows industry and educational institutions ways to systematically integrate sustainability in their processes.
It's only natural that this 'green team' should also be appointed associate professors on the same day, namely 1 April.

-This strengthens Design School Kolding's research and teaching efforts in sustainability significantly, and we now have one of Denmark's most important research environments within design, material uses, design's role in value chains and the development of new, green business models, says Professor Lene Tanggaard, Rector at Design School Kolding.

Design School Kolding is a frontrunner in the field of sustainability and has worked with dedication on the topic for more than 20 years. Ulla Ræbild is head of the Design for Planet MA programme, to which Karen Marie Hasling is also a great contributor.

Design for Planet views the value of design as a means of generating changes in the way we do things. Hence the programme − both directly and indirectly − addresses the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which call on all countries in the world to assume a shared responsibility and be prepared to produce, consume and act sustainably.

Design for Planet encourages free and critical thinking in relation to the sustainable agendas it addresses and the programme embraces an understanding of the designer as a transformer of what exists here and now as well as a generator of novel solutions so that design can contribute as much as possible to a more sustainable world.

“This strengthens Design School Kolding's research and teaching efforts in sustainability significantly, and we now have one of Denmark's most important research environments within design, material uses, design's role in value chains and the development of new, green business models.Professor Lene Tanggaard, Rector at Design School Kolding.”
