Roughly 23 billion pairs. So many new pairs of shoes are produced every year, without any system or concept for what happens to the shoes after use.
The Footwear of the Century as DIY
Linda Egtved Olesen’s footwear design aims to address this enormous resource challenge. A variation of the ECCO soles forms the basis of the shoe, and these are combined with multiple tops and interchangeable linings, so one shoe can be converted into a host of styles – from a boot to a sneaker to a fashion statement. The assembly concept makes it easy to discard one part that is no longer viable, which makes recycling more manageable.
