Meet Evy Cornelissen.

Design School Kolding is transforming. For this exciting transformation, the school will temporarily relocate from Aagade 10 to Dyrehavevej 116. The look of the school will change, but the strong community and shared passion for design within Design School Kolding will remain the same.

In the series “New setting, Same people”, members of the institution will give an insight into their part in this community. Today we give you MA student Evy Cornelissen.

What inspires and/or fascinates you?
In my work, I find it important to question material qualities, material culture, history, heritage, and existing systems. I am interested in how craft knowledge can help us reconnect to nature and show us the quality of natural resources to create objects with a soul in contrast with mass-production. Systems, ideas or material studies could help us to change existing perspectives. I find inspiration in daily life observations and projects that are made for true needs with fundamental skills involved.

What is your background (what did you do before you got to Design School Kolding)?
I started my design studies at SintLucas Boxtel in the Netherlands in product and spatial design. I continued with a bachelor at Design Academy Eindhoven in the department Activity/Invisible Studio. During the bachelor I did an internship and a minor in textile design.

Why did you choose to study at Design School Kolding?
The Design School offers many interesting workshop facilities. The combination Textile and Planet is suiting to the way I work. The master itself gives methods and theory next to practice to support the design process. After Corona it was also nice to have two more years to explore and have the freedom to develop my interests in design projects.

What would be your dream assignment?
I don’t have one dream assignment but rather a dream purpose of what I want to accomplish with design projects. I hope my projects will touch people and make them think from different perspectives. I want to design for the needs of the environment and people. The idea of creating connectedness and empathy towards our natural resources and craft is my dream. I don’t believe in the Designer as the protagonist, the focus should be on the problems people face in their daily lives, with respect towards nature. We are the ones who visualize and communicate, empower change and create collaboration.

And what are you most excited about while the school is being transformed?
I am looking forward to see the building being transformed and what the working spaces will look like. Dyrehavevej has a nice light and structure. The environment of the building feels connected to the natural surroundings which creates a nice atmosphere to work.
